{"id":92575,"date":"2026-01-07T17:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/92575\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T17:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:52:07","slug":"staten-island-regains-city-council-gop-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/92575\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island regains City Council GOP leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JHGALJ4NEVAEBAYLNXZFZ3RAZE\">CITY HALL \u2014 A politically-symbolic City Council position once again belongs to a Staten Islander after members of the city legislative body chose leadership Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DFF6KU5BYNBUBEVUON54PZ5UBY\">Councilmember David Carr, a Republican representing the Mid-Island, will serve as the Council\u2019s new minority leader for the 51-member body\u2019s five Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7OQLW2PCRFCDOCL2K7V2X4BSI\">\u201cI am humbled and honored to have been chosen to lead the City Council\u2019s dynamic Republican Conference, and I will strive to be worthy of the role, understanding the eminent footsteps in which I am following,\u201d Carr said. \u201cI look forward to working with my fellow Republicans, as well as my colleagues in government, to ensure that voice is heard loud and clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q6WH7QYPKBBBRLGZSD5YTKQNZ4\">Carr previously held the position for a brief period last year after former Councilmember Joseph Borelli resigned, but soon faced an internal challenge from Queens Republican Councilmember Joann Ariola.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PWUPSKJX45GGPMYXFEDBMUK2GA\">In a meeting shortly before his resignation, Borelli joined Carr and Brooklyn Councilmember Inna Vernikov in naming Carr as his leadership successor, but Ariola and two of her supporters challenged that move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5AOQC3TO4VGM5BX3E2XBFIK4YM\">Ariola\u2019s minor coup came down to former Speaker Adrienne Adams, another Queens representative, and the Council parliamentarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2025\/02\/this-is-the-first-time-this-city-council-position-has-been-held-by-a-non-staten-islander-in-20-years.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2025\/02\/this-is-the-first-time-this-city-council-position-has-been-held-by-a-non-staten-islander-in-20-years.html\">handing the leadership position to Adams\u2019 borough mate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XMB26LHZDJG3ZMSDGUI4GDE7EY\">With one of Ariola\u2019s supporters, former Bronx Councilmember Kristy Marmorato, losing her seat in November, Carr gained a simple 3-2 majority of support \u2014 himself, Vernikov and South Shore Councilmember Frank Morano \u2014 among the Council Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QIMCEJM355CXJMVV3YRN7X6BRU\">\u201cNow, more than ever, our city needs a compelling conservative voice to counterbalance the loud and radical left, to fight back against those who spew anti-American and anti-democratic dogma that seeks to divide and diminish us, and to stand up for the values and ideals that have made our city and our country great,\u201d Carr said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ATMR4SSEQJHCDFR3ACPV6O2KHI\">\u201cNew Yorkers need Republicans to show them we can provide real solutions to the difficult problems everyday New Yorkers face;
