The 165-year-old house was never included in any landmark districts, and documents filed last month show plans to take it down and build 17 apartments, \u201cmost likely condos,\u201d according to New York YIMBY, which <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkyimby.com\/2025\/12\/permits-filed-for-158-south-oxford-street-in-fort-greene-brooklyn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broke<\/a> news of a demolition permit last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.curbed.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmk47uj8n002d3b7ad1b5hbfh@published\" data-word-count=\"94\">The 1860 building \u2014 with its wide, farmhouse-style porch and lacy gingerbread details \u2014 looks something like an old country house and was built to be one, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/architecture\/building-of-the-140\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> Suzanne Spellen, the architectural historian who had called for the home to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/architecture\/building-of-the-140\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">included<\/a> in an expanded historic district after a failed attempt to bulldoze its carriage house in 2007. Fort Greene, meanwhile, has recently been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/architecture\/fort-greene-church-144-st-felix-apartment-tower-lpc-hearing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arguing<\/a> over plans to put an apartment tower on top of a landmarked church, and there aren\u2019t a lot of 19th-century wood-frame houses left in the neighborhood, Spellen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/architecture\/building-of-the-140\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>                  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/9675647fffda0746fc833832be8dfdde25-nynyma-rec0040-3-02004-0054.rvertical.w570.jpg\" class=\"img-data\" data-content-img=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"712\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>\n      A 1940 tax photo shows the building at age 80. Not much has changed, but the building was left out of historic districts.<br \/>\n      Photo: Courtesy of the Municipal Archives\/City of New York\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.curbed.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmk47ujc1002e3b7aijoocl1t@published\" data-word-count=\"93\">The current owner is the artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marclambrechts.com\/bio-cv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Lambrechts<\/a>, according to Brownstoner, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/development\/fort-greene-158-south-oxford-street-demolition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that \u201cthe property has been owned by artists for decades,\u201d given who he bought from: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/11\/arts\/design\/richard-artschwager-painter-and-sculptor-dies-at-89.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Artschwager<\/a>, who seems to have used the carriage house as a <a href=\"https:\/\/massimodecarlo.com\/exhibitions\/richard-artschwager-curated-by-rob-pruitt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studio<\/a>. Those owners appear to have kept the building in habitable shape, given a <a href=\"https:\/\/streeteasy.com\/building\/158-south-oxford-street-brooklyn\/1?utm_campaign=rental_listing&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_source=web&amp;lstt=9EcesryKJeoArX1absJG5SUhLyxYaZV0TZApFvMpaMo24Qa-u1CdO89nWuehxsamQoTTJNUWJ3UOE-Xw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rental listing<\/a> from October asking $13,500 for the downstairs duplex: a four-bedroom, 2,500-square-foot spread that could be taken furnished, Eames lounge included.
