Michael Ollis, a New Dorp resident killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2013, rests with President Donald Trump. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TXKUI6W27RB63OG62WQHFAEUJI\">The latest push has reached new heights and has the backing of several local and federal leaders, including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who wrote a letter to U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer in December on the matter. That letter informed the Senate Minority Leader that Hegseth believed Ollis\u2019 actions merit award of the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BH3HWJFZWJFVFA6NTNWMU7LEHQ\">\u201cI am writing to inform you of my favorable determination regarding the award of the Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis, U.S. Army,\u201d the letter read in part. \u201cI reviewed a recommendation from the Secretary of the Army to upgrade the Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Staff Sergeant Ollis, to the Medal of Honor, for his valorous actions on August 28, 2013 during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. After giving the recommendation careful consideration, I agree that Staff Sergeant Ollis\u2019 actions merit award of the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EZAYA5TEWJF2TJIETL5KQDCJWY\">\u201cThe final award authority for the Medal of Honor rests solely with the President,\u201d Hegseth noted in the letter. \u201cMy favorable determination in no way presumes how the President will decide the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An ongoing effort for Staten Island\u2019s own<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SDRB6RYCQZCGDBMZAH6T4F53ZM\">The renewed push for this recognition began in June, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/veterans-renew-push-for-staten-island-hero-to-receive-medal-of-honor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/veterans-renew-push-for-staten-island-hero-to-receive-medal-of-honor.html\">Richmond County American Legion penned a resolution<\/a> advocating Ollis\u2019 Distinguished Service Cross be upgraded to the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"File photo: Ollis service cross\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NTTFY6IZJRC5RIARWGMBOL6BZQ.jpg\"  \/>This photo from 2019 shows the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military award that can be given to a member of the United States Army. Ollis who earned the award for extraordinary heroism in Afghanistan on August 28, 2013.(Advance\/SILive.com |  Jan Somma-Hammel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QSBU7E3EWVHORPICQ3BTW4LPXA\">In July, Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/big-name-politician-asks-us-army-to-award-staten-island-hero-with-medal-of-honor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/big-name-politician-asks-us-army-to-award-staten-island-hero-with-medal-of-honor.html\">a letter to Chief of Staff of the Army General Randy A. George,<\/a> urging the Army to recommend Ollis for the distinction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3JMBS5VUPRFFXKWNAVAPVP665Y\">\u201cSSG Michael Ollis was among the best that our nation has to offer,\u201d the letter read. \u201cHe is the quintessence of what it means to be American, and his life is a testament to the values of the US Army and the United States of America. As such, I urge you to consider upgrading SSG Ollis\u2019 Distinguished Service Cross decoration and recommending him for the Medal of Honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I4HWVMGPMFFE3E25RZWRPEAPHM\">This renewed effort by Schumer follows another in 2022. At that time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/03\/schumer-presses-for-medal-of-honor-for-staff-sgt-michael-ollis-best-our-nation-has-to-offer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/03\/schumer-presses-for-medal-of-honor-for-staff-sgt-michael-ollis-best-our-nation-has-to-offer.html\">Schumer wrote a letter to Gen. James McConville<\/a>, former chief of staff of the Army, asking the U.S. Department of Defense to recommend Ollis for the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LZXGSPPAGNG6PARKYUYNUF725A\">The 2025 bipartisan push generated momentum and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/08\/staten-island-hero-michael-ollis-push-for-medal-of-honor-gains-momentum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/08\/staten-island-hero-michael-ollis-push-for-medal-of-honor-gains-momentum.html\">the backing of Republican South Shore Councilman Frank Morano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DI5YK6TD2VFPLBHMGKH22NNVAE\">\u201cStaff Sgt. Michael Ollis made the ultimate sacrifice, stepping into harm\u2019s way to protect his fellow soldiers,\u201d Morano said in a written statement back in August. \u201cHis courage that day not only saved lives \u2014 it defined what it means to be an American hero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WD57EWV5M5AADLEXU7MLXKVLJ4\">In September, a spokesperson from Schumer\u2019s Office told the Advance\/SILive.com that the recommendation was being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/push-to-award-staten-island-hero-soldier-with-medal-of-honor-takes-another-step.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/push-to-award-staten-island-hero-soldier-with-medal-of-honor-takes-another-step.html\">presented to the Army Decorations Board for review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"File photo: Ollis memorial\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ZHKNCHFIMZHINLVMUYVRG67IME.jpg\"  \/>This photo from Aug. 28, 2014, shows the memorial to Staff Sgt. Ollis Way (Burbank Avenue) in Staten Island.(Advance\/SILive.com | Maura Grunlund)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TM7PWQL2ZJD3THY63GKZKOE7W4\">As explained by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/medalofhonor\/process.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/medalofhonor\/process.html\">U.S. Army<\/a>, after merit review, the recommendation goes to the Senior Army Decorations Board, which recommends approval, disapproval or downgrade. From there, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, as well as the chief of staff of the Army, can either concur with the board recommendation or not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JV5QW6PAH5HXVH6J2SKUKUQLJA\">Should they concur, the recommendation goes to the secretary of the Army for approval. If the secretary approves, the recommendation will find itself with the secretary of defense and then, ultimately, the president, who will make the final decision. The Department of Defense was renamed to the Department of War in September at the order of President Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZWEW57EELFHYNOOFEIELXWLKJA\">Bob Ollis, Michael\u2019s father, discussed the renewed effort with the Advance\/SILive.com in August. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XC644BHQJFHPVNL2NRNYVH7AKA\">\u201cYou got a mom and a dad who lost their child, and everybody wants to honor him&#8230;,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have no idea what that feels like.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PZ5GQCE3HRHRRPP63EQ2MX3AFM\">\u201cI can\u2019t thank them (Schumer, Morano, the Richmond County American Legion) enough. We hope and we pray. It\u2019s up to God now to push it through,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Ollis\u2019 valiant sacrifice<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CTRDILXJ6ZHQJK2SXKJND3LHTU\">Ollis died in 2013 during a Taliban raid on Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DMHFCHPFLNBI5ADF3U3X6JUYME\">As noted in Schumer\u2019s letter, at the time, Ollis, 24, was serving as a squad leader in Bushmaster Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division during his third combat deployment.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Michael Ollis\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SJ7BUTJPIBELFJPADTJTASWZFU.jpg\"  \/>This photo from 2020, shows Linda Ollis holding a photo of her son Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, who died in Afganistan, in a room dedicated in his honor at their New Dorp home.Advance\/SILive.com | Jan Somma-Hammel<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z3KB7XEHGVAJJCNMIFYR4H77HM\">It was on Aug. 28 that the base came under fire and Ollis mobilized the men under his command to a secure location and \u201cwithout pause or hesitation answered the call to duty\u201d and advanced towards the assailants, according to Schumer\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BUO7C4XI55APLBUHKHRYU2VUXM\">Ollis rallied with coalition forces, among them Polish Officer 2nd Lt. Karol Cierpica. It was at this time that Ollis and Cierpica came in contact with a suicide bomber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V6NSKRY7ZRAVVISAZEEZ7HFQ3Y\">In an act of heroism, Ollis positioned himself between the bomber and Cierpica, firing upon the target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K7YWAHNKMNH77FURETMRFJSYYY\">Although Ollis was able to effectively drop the attacker, the vest detonated and killed him, but he shielded Cierpica from the full blast, saving Cierpica\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SITOZPSWB5CDLD5BIVE6V2QN5E\">As further indicated in the letter, witnesses present at the base that day claim that Ollis\u2019 sacrifice not only saved Cierpica, but it preserved the lives of more than 40 military and civilian personnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSC2E62PIVDABAQXOU564CN32A\">Ollis has since been recognized with the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Audie Murphy Medallion, and the Polish Armed Forces Gold Medal \u2014 that nation\u2019s highest honor for non-citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7TPMUZZA4RCUTIBNDURVYRI2XI\">In 2019, Ollis\u2019 Silver Star was upgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Among the best the borough has to offer<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C3DIFRXJLNBQ5GZPGILZDYJMDE\">If the president approves this latest push for the Medal of Honor, Ollis will become the third Staten Islander to receive the distinction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"72W22T75F5DOLIR3K5NIX6F5W4\">The Rev. Lt. Vincent R. Capodanno received the Medal of Honor in 1969 for his service during the Vietnam War and Joseph F. Merrell Jr. received the award in 1946 for his service during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XTE3P77O55EHRMXQL46U4A2YPI\">Capodanno <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/09\/in-gods-hands-57-years-after-his-death-efforts-to-establish-sainthood-for-father-capodanno-have-new-life.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/09\/in-gods-hands-57-years-after-his-death-efforts-to-establish-sainthood-for-father-capodanno-have-new-life.html\">died in action<\/a> while ministering to wounded Marines on the battlefield during the Vietnam War. He was 38 years old. There is an ongoing push for Capodanno to be canonized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5QEYG4PZIVDDPFCFAGBEGUIOZ4\">Merrell was 18 years old when he \u201cmade a gallant, one-man attack against vastly superior enemy forces near Lohe, Germany,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/timecapsule\/2021\/11\/remembering-an-18-year-old-staten-islander-who-died-in-a-gallant-one-man-attack-during-wwii.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/timecapsule\/2021\/11\/remembering-an-18-year-old-staten-islander-who-died-in-a-gallant-one-man-attack-during-wwii.html\">according to his Medal of Honor citation<\/a>.
