{"id":94131,"date":"2026-01-08T21:38:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T21:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/94131\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T21:38:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T21:38:14","slug":"long-island-students-far-surpass-state-averages-in-math-and-english-while-nyc-kids-struggle-to-keep-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/94131\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Island students far surpass state averages in math and English, while NYC kids struggle to keep up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long Island students are outperforming the average test takers throughout the state in math and English \u2014 while New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/07\/us-news\/queens-hs-under-probe-for-passing-struggling-math-students\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public school kids<\/a> are struggling to stay afloat, according to new data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 85% of Nassau and Suffolk County\u2019s 37,000 combined students passed the English regents last school year \u2014 10% higher than the state\u2019s average \u2014 while nearly 70% made it through the new algebra regents, smoking the state\u2019s benchmark of 56%, new data from the state <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/08\/us-news\/gov-hochul-announces-lofty-plan-to-offer-free-child-care-nyc-2-year-olds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Education Department<\/a> detailed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, New York City\u2019s over 121,000 public school students are struggling to catch up, with 48% of them passing the algebra regents and just 68% clearing the English regents, as a majority of kids in both subjects scraped by Level 3 scores, the most basic proficiency, and backslid by several percentage points compared to the year prior, the data read.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.47976879;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38132088\" width=\"873\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/closeup-english-exam-sheet-table-118392909_82ead2.jpg\" alt=\"An English grammar test with a pencil pointing to a multiple-choice question.\" class=\"wp-image-38132088\"  \/>Long Island students are outperforming NYC and the rest of NY state.  lamaip \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Long Island students, however, largely <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/26\/us-news\/state-teachers-union-blasts-biology-earth-science-regents-exams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed the exams<\/a> at identical rates to the prior school year \u2014 but subsequently saw a 10% drop off in those reaching the highest level of achievement year-over-year on the English regents, identical to NYC\u2019s 8% fall from the year prior, according to the state\u2019s figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely is a big drop from the highest level,\u201d Bob Vecchio, Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The share of Long Island students earning a Level 5 score on the English regents \u2014 the state\u2019s highest distinction \u2014 fell to just over 43% in the 2024\u201325 school year, down from 53% the year prior while NYC saw a drop from 30% to 22%, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p>The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/17\/us-news\/more-than-60-long-island-school-districts-test-positive-for-elevated-lead-in-students-drinking-water\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Long Island school districts<\/a> where at least 90% of students tested proficient also fell, dropping from 61 to 51 of the 99 districts that reported results, most of which were high-needs districts, the data detailed.<\/p>\n<p>For example, 99% of all Cold Spring Harbor students passed the English regents, meanwhile a little under 60% of students in Wyandanch passed the same exam.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38132077\" width=\"590\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/executive-director-nassau-suffolk-school-118392913_a86e91.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Vecchio, Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association.\" class=\"wp-image-38132077\"  \/>Bob Vecchio, Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association.
