New York City\u2019s first Sonic Drive-In, at 148 Page Avenue\u2014closed over the summer, leaving both buildings vacant on the corner. Popeyes did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SOLOZNHSIFAOTPSSSOGM3BF3MA\">According to the official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popeyes.com\/store-locator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.popeyes.com\/store-locator\">Popeyes restaurant locator<\/a>, there are three operating locations on Staten Island: 2655 Richmond Ave. in New Springville near the Mall, 2506 Hylan Blvd. in New Dorp, and 1351 Forest Ave. in Port Richmond. The Richmond Valley location has been removed from the map and the 2363 Forest Ave. location\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2025\/08\/this-fried-chicken-restaurant-is-making-a-comeback-in-staten-island-after-suddenly-closing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2025\/08\/this-fried-chicken-restaurant-is-making-a-comeback-in-staten-island-after-suddenly-closing.html\">previously shuttered after a landlord\u2011tenant dispute<\/a>\u2014is also no longer listed.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Popeyes\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RID2W5EEDRHRNAKCS7A2XZUIOA.jpeg\"  \/>According to the store locator map on the Popeyes website, there are three of its restaurants located on Staten Island as of Jan. 9, 2026.(Screenshot from Popeyes.com on Jan. 9, 2026)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UTH543P5ENC65KV26TAB4ZUMXA\">As the Richmond Valley location awaits its next chapter, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2022\/07\/si-gets-its-first-popeyes-drive-thru-restaurant.html \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2022\/07\/si-gets-its-first-popeyes-drive-thru-restaurant.html \">brand\u2019s own history<\/a> offers a reminder of its rapid rise. Popeyes traces its roots to New Orleans in 1972, when Al Copeland Sr. launched a small fried chicken shop called Chicken on the Run. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.popeyes.com\/blog-posts\/the-history-of-popeyes-louisiana-kitchen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.popeyes.com\/blog-posts\/the-history-of-popeyes-louisiana-kitchen\">According to the company\u2019s history<\/a>, after slow sales, he rebranded it as Popeyes, named after Popeye Doyle from The French Connection. The pivot paid off: by 1976, the company opened its first franchise and within nine years it had grown to 500 locations.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Popeye's closure\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/KBZJKOGOFZGBLKWRRADAPBKOAM.jpeg\"  \/>The former Popeyes has been rebranded.(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HGQGTXSZXZA57P2XXCBM46NPDA\">Meanwhile, its next\u2011door neighbor on Staten Island\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2025\/08\/nycs-historic-first-sonic-drive-in-quietly-closes-on-staten-island-with-future-unclear.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2025\/08\/nycs-historic-first-sonic-drive-in-quietly-closes-on-staten-island-with-future-unclear.html\">New York City\u2019s first Sonic Drive\u2011In, at 148 Page Avenue<\/a>\u2014closed over the summer after years of declining customer satisfaction and recent health inspection issues. Although the building was shuttered and covered in brown paper in August, a person affiliated with the restaurant said it was expected to reopen under the Sonic brand. The company did not respond to inquiries at the time. As of January, the site had not reopened and had fallen into disrepair, with garbage scattered across the property.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Popeye's closure\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AD6POG2TRRG3VDCAKHMCX7QF7Q.jpeg\"  \/>Next door to the former Popeyes, the building that once housed Sonic is also vacant.(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SYSSR6SZGRBA7BZSZCBTIEJ7DA\">The location had a history of violations, including a 51-point inspection in 2024. Its most recent inspection, in July 2024, improved with a \u201cB.\u201d There was no indication the city had forced a permanent shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MK65ZWSC5FDQNJX4XMNISXZIPM\">When Sonic opened in 2015\u2014hailed by <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2015\/5\/28\/8676935\/sonic-drive-in-first-nyc-outpost-staten-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2015\/5\/28\/8676935\/sonic-drive-in-first-nyc-outpost-staten-island\">Eater.com as \u201cway the hell out in Staten Island\u201d<\/a>\u2014the corner drew major crowds for the borough\u2019s first location, even though its debut had been delayed two years by construction stops, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2015\/05\/little_caesars_closes_in_donga.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2015\/05\/little_caesars_closes_in_donga.html\">traffic studies<\/a>, and required roadwork. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2015\/07\/sonic_restaurant_on_staten_isl.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/dining\/2015\/07\/sonic_restaurant_on_staten_isl.html\">Hiring was aggressive<\/a>, with 100 to 150 positions advertised, including roller-skating carhops. Over time, enthusiasm waned, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/sonic-drive-in-staten-island?osq=sonic+drive-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/sonic-drive-in-staten-island?osq=sonic+drive-in\">online reviews<\/a> cited long waits and incorrect orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5KOKUROQJFGIRD3JX3GXQFUJIU\">Sonic\u2019s origins date to 1953, when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.okhistory.org\/learn\/sonic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.okhistory.org\/learn\/sonic\"> founder Troy Smith opened a drive-in in Oklahoma<\/a>. After partnering with entrepreneur Charlie Pappe, the pair rebranded as Sonic, inspired by the slogan \u201cService at the Speed of Sound.\u201d The franchise grew steadily, reaching 41 locations by 1967.
