A late-night comedy legend is coming down hard on comics for \u201cjust screaming\u201d about their anger at President Donald Trump and not being funny, the New York Post reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

During an interview with the Oxford Union, comedy icon Conan O\u2019Brien said that too many comics are just launching their personal vitriol at Trump instead of going for laughs. <\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien said that attacking Trump for the off-the-wall things that the president says actually undermines comedy. <\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien said, \u201cSome comics go the route of I\u2019m going to just say \u2018F Trump\u2019 all the time or that\u2019s their comedy. And I think well now\u2026you\u2019re being co-opted because you\u2019re so angry. You\u2019ve been lulled. It\u2019s like a siren leading you into the rocks. You\u2019ve been lulled into just saying \u2018F Trump. F Trump. F Trump. Screw this guy.\u2019 And I think you\u2019ve now put down your best weapon, which is being funny, and you\u2019ve exchanged it for anger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former host of \u201cLate Night\u201d and \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d continued, \u201cAnd that person or any person like that would say, \u2018Well, things are too serious now. I don\u2019t need to be funny.\u2019 And I think, well, if you\u2019re a comedian, you always need to be funny. You just have to find a way. And you just have to find a way to channel that anger into a way\u2026because good art will always be a great weapon, will always be a perfect weapon against power. But if you\u2019re just screaming and you\u2019re just angry, you\u2019ve lost your best tool in the toolbox.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedy icon said that Trump\u2019s habit of \u201ctalking crazy\u201d actually made it difficult to satirize or parody the president. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really going on a limb here saying that\u2019s his greatest crime. I think he\u2019s hurt political comedy by being so outlandish himself.
