New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani claimed that the death of 37-year-old mother Renee Nicole Good at the hands of an ICE agent was the result of a \u201cyear of cruelty\u201d from the Trump administration \u2014 as he doubled down on his incendiary declaration that it was a \u201cmurder.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mamdani pushed back on Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem\u2019s claim that the federal immigration officer was doing as he was trained when he fatally shot Good in her car after she hit him in Minneapolis on Wednesday, instead blaming President Trump\u2019s aggressive deployment of ICE agents across the country for her death.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf that is following his training, then I think there are larger questions about the training that\u2019s being provided to ICE agents,\u201d the Democratic socialist told CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can all see that video and come to our own conclusions that that ICE agent murdered a woman in Minneapolis, and it is a glimpse into what has been a year full of cruelty.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mamdani said he believes New Yorkers\u00a0\u2014 3 million of whom are immigrants \u2014\u00a0woke up yesterday feeling \u201ca heightened sense of anxiety\u201d and fear of leaving their homes.<\/p>\n
The mayor said he\u2019s shared his concerns with Trump about ICE\u2019s \u201cinhumane\u201d operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is clear to myself and to so many across the country, as I\u2019ve shared with the president directly, that these ICE raids are cruel and inhumane and they do nothing to further the cause or the interest of public safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Collins then pressed Mamdani on why he once again chose to describe the fatal shooting as a \u201cmurder,\u201d something that even Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey \u2014 who furiously told ICE to \u201cget the f\u2014k out\u201d of his city \u2014 has refrained from saying.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was the conclusion I came to just in watching that video, and I think that\u2019s the conclusion many Americans came to, that same conclusion, no matter how many times this is mischaracterized by others,\u201d Hizzoner responded.<\/p>\n
Mamdani has consistently promoted resistance against ICE, which he has described as a \u201crogue\u201d agency, and, in his Democratic primary victory speech in June, promised to use his power as mayor \u201cto reject Donald Trump\u2019s fascism [and] to stop mass ICE agents from deporting our neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last month, he\u00a0urged New Yorkers to \u201cstand up\u201d to ICE<\/a>\u00a0in a video message\u00a0after a raid in Chinatown.<\/p>\n He then outlined how New Yorkers can exercise their constitutional rights when interacting with immigration authorities.<\/p>\n Other Democrats have also\u00a0ramped up their anti-ICE rhetoric<\/a>\u00a0as protests erupt in cities across the country, including in the Big Apple, in response to Good\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n Many in Congress are even considering forcing a government shutdown to pressure the agency to make changes,\u00a0according to reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n Federal agents scuffle with protesters during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Jan. 8, 2026.
