STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Police fatally shot a 37-year-old Great Kills man Thursday night after he allegedly pointed an imitation firearm at officers in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
Assistant Chief James McCarthy, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Manhattan South, shared details of the shooting during a press conference late Thursday night.<\/p>\n
According to preliminary information, at approximately 10:53 p.m., officers on patrol were flagged down by two individuals in the vicinity of Bedford Street and 6th Avenue, he said.<\/p>\n
Those individuals informed police that they were involved in a vehicle collision with a BMW that attempted to flee the scene.<\/p>\n
That BMW was stuck in traffic when officers approached, the chief said. It was then that a man, later identified as Dmitriy Zass of the 400 block of Elverton Avenue, allegedly stepped out of the BMW and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the officers, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n
In observing what looked to be a gun, officers shot Zass. Despite repeated commands from officers to drop the weapon, Zass maintained possession of the firearm and said nothing, McCarthy said.<\/p>\n
Officers immediately requested EMS to transport Zass to an area hospital, McCarthy added. It was at the hospital that Zass was pronounced deceased at 11:17 p.m.<\/p>\n
The two officers involved in the shooting were taken to an area hospital for evaluation, police said.<\/p>\n
The imitation firearm was recovered at the scene. It has since been identified as a Sig Sauer air pistol, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.<\/p>\n
The incident is being investigated by the NYPD\u2019s Force Investigation Division, according to McCarthy.<\/p>\n
The West Village shooting came just a few hours after another officer-involved shooting in a Brooklyn hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day, the men and women of the NYPD put their lives on the line to protect New Yorkers,\u201d Tisch said, in part, on Friday in a post on X. \u201cLast night (Thursday) was no different. Officers were engaged in two police-involved shootings, and there is every indication that their actions were nothing short of heroic.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani also posted a statement on X in the wake of the shootings on Friday. The post stated the following:<\/p>\n
\u201cLast night\u2019s shootings at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and in the West Village are devastating to all New Yorkers. I know many are eager for answers. The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation \u2014 I will work with Commissioner Tisch to ensure this is as thorough and swift as possible. These tragedies are painful, whether they take place steps from our home or miles away.
