Curran, Jr., whose career shaped Staten Island\u2019s future as the \u201cBorough of Parks,\u201d died at home in Aberdeen, New Jersey on Jan. 7. He was 89.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MLSGQ2UJZBDYHIQ7Q63UE656HY\">Curran was born and raised on Staten Island. He grew up in Port Richmond and Westerleigh and went to Port Richmond High School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BBVY5KXESZE43J4OEFKLLJAZYA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/obits.silive.com\/us\/obituaries\/siadvance\/name\/joseph-curran-obituary?id=60494754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/obits.silive.com\/us\/obituaries\/siadvance\/name\/joseph-curran-obituary?id=60494754\">According to a family obituary<\/a>, at a young age, Curran joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving honorably for eight years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KS6GJ2T44JGTTHCPMOYPDYXBFM\">He then dedicated nearly four decades to the New York City Parks Department. According to Staten Island Advance archives, Curran began in the Parks Department as a gardener and rose through the ranks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VNALFLMU6VGWLIVHPNBFK23JI4\">Over the years, he worked as a tractor operator, a seasonal park supervisor and foreman of Washington Square Park in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CR747SUPDBDN3N7EFREDE6JKJE\">He served as Staten Island\u2019s first-ever borough commissioner, working in the role for 14 years. He was given the role in 1981 as part of an experiment to give more responsibility to borough parks managers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SKQKZLXR4VDPFPII2WCFRFROG4\">Curran played a role in the creation of numerous Staten Island parks, perhaps most notably preserving and acquiring land for the Staten Island Greenbelt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RYVHL4ZGABBK5M44VR2SVL2MPQ\">During his tenure, the Parks Department holdings on Staten Island grew to more than 6,000 acres. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Blue Heron Park, Bloomingdale Park and Kingsfisher Pond Park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ICCOPVTOMVCSZNMLC3JRBHF2GI\">He was involved in creating the Parks Department\u2019s education and recreational programs through the Urban Park Rangers, the Park Enforcement Police and environmental education programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B6TM34G6NBBP7B2OOSXKRDJCTI\">Curran retired in December 1992.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RGQ65AMLYFE7TJSBA6BQ277TPI\">After his retirement, he was honored by then-Borough President Guy Molinari, who presented Curran with a book on horse-breeding as his peers lauded him with a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GPN2V7UWPJGCDAPXV7OUIAZ5TE\">At the time, Molinari said Curran was \u201can example of what every public servant should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HTHYELQEXZEAHPSRQERCT2XRR4\">In brief remarks at the ceremony, Curran said \u201cI am very proud of what I was able to accomplish with Guy and the other borough presidents. Curran Jr; Assemblywoman Elizabeth Connelly, and Borough President Ralph Lamberti breaking ground for a rehabilitation project at Willowbrook Park in 1989.Staten Island Advance<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WLZV5SQ2UJBEZB5WDFHBB6KRRE\">As borough parks commissioner, he was active in the Staten Island community and represented the borough in various public events such as riding with the NYC Central Park Mounted Police in the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Parade and participating several times in St. Patrick\u2019s Day Parades on Staten Island and in New York City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SIRF4TSOQJB7XIQQLF2NAMCT5A\">Outside of his career, Curran had a passion for animals and was especially skilled with horses. He obtained his USTA Trainers and Drivers\u2019 Licenses and owned and trained horses that raced at East Coast tracks such as Meadowlands and Freehold Raceway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IMLS6FV5VBBGRGQG354JTAG4VE\">He also had a passion for golf, flying and blackjack. On Staten Island, Curran participated in the Celebrity Golf Classic tournament. Curran III, and wife Jacqueline; his daughter, Ethel O. Curran; his grandson, Joseph Thomas Curran and many loving nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VMR6N5ZF55BPZJDHQKXQXNJA5M\">A visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 11 from 1 \u2013 4 p.m. at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel.
