{"id":96178,"date":"2026-01-11T02:16:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T02:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/96178\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T02:16:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T02:16:06","slug":"nyc-is-in-grave-danger-with-mamdanis-anti-policing-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/96178\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC is in grave danger with Mamdani\u2019s anti-policing policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The late <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/18\/colin-powell-former-general-and-secretary-of-state-dead-at-84\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Powell<\/a>, in an interview about the difference between governing and campaigning, invoked his long experience and humor to describe it this way: \u201cI think any human being with an IQ over 40, who is a mammal, loves governing more than campaigning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame that Powell, a top military leader and a secretary of state who died in 2021, isn\u2019t available to counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/02\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-proudly-stands-by-executive-order-changing-definition-of-antisemitism-after-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If he were, perhaps he could get through to New York\u2019s new mayor, who appears to be so in love with campaigning that he can\u2019t kick the habit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though he\u2019s been in office less than two weeks, Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s Socialist-echoing choices of words and topics are early warning signs of trouble ahead.\u00a0 ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>How else to explain Mamdani\u2019s grating tendency to speak in ways that appeal only to his base of far-leftist supporters? <\/p>\n<p>Though he\u2019s been in office less than two weeks, his Socialist-echoing choices of words and topics are early warning signs of trouble ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMichael Goodwin<\/p>\n<p>The 34-year-old mayor was in clear campaign mode last week when he parroted the radical mob condemning events in Minnesota and used the most loaded language possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Murdered\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning, an ICE agent murdered a woman in Minneapolis \u2014 only the latest horror in a year full of cruelty,\u201d Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/2009015792382390463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said in a statement on X<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs ICE attacks our neighbors across America, it is an attack on us all. New York stands with immigrants today, and every day that follows.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stew of anti-ICE bile, the use of the inflammatory word \u201cmurder\u201d and his habit of erasing the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants are all standard fare among far-left wackos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Such fact-free remarks would not carry much weight if Mamdani were still a junior legislator in Albany, where nobody cares what newbies say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he is now the mayor of America\u2019s largest city, giving far greater significance to all his words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And because the vast majority of 8.5 million New Yorkers did not vote for him, it\u2019s time he starts to behave as something other than a candidate and a junior back-bencher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Video footage taken by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shows Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7, 2026, moments before she was shot and killed in Minneapolis. ALPHA NEWS\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, he is in charge of and responsible for the nation\u2019s largest police force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD has 35,000 men and women in its ranks, and they are trained extensively in situations where they must make crucial decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They are armed because their No. 1 job is to protect innocent lives, and they have every right to expect that their mayor will back them in those life-and-death situations \u2014 unless and until the facts prove the officers acted improperly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On that front, the first big tests came quickly, and Mamdani\u2019s response earned him a big fat F \u2014 for failure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not long after he used the word \u201cmurder\u201d to describe the ICE shooting in Minneapolis, he was confronted by two fatal NYPD shootings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His initial reaction was not what cops have a right to expect, and not what Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/05\/us-news\/mamdani-clarifies-nypd-commissioner-jessica-tisch-reports-directly-to-him-shutting-down-demotion-rumors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Tisch<\/a> hoped for, The Post reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police vehicles are parked outside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, in Brooklyn, after an NYPD officer shot a man wielding a sharp object inside. AP<\/p>\n<p>Both incidents took place Thursday, with the first in NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Park Slope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/08\/us-news\/nyc-hospital-on-lockdown-after-police-involved-shooting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a bloodied patient barricaded himself<\/a> in a room with a sharp, broken piece of a toilet and was trying to hurt another patient and a member of the hospital\u2019s security staff in a blood-smeared room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Tasers failed to stop the assailant, police fired their weapons, killing him. <\/p>\n<p>He was later identified as 62-year-old Michael Lynch, a one-time police officer who resigned from the force some 30 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Major leagues\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/09\/us-news\/nyc-road-rage-suspect-shot-dead-in-altercation-with-cops-sources\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second shooting unfolded<\/a> six hours later when cops were flagged down at the scene of a road rage incident in the West Village.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They said a motorist, later identified as 37-year-old Dmitry Zass, walked out of a BMW, apparently with a gun in his hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When he refused to drop the gun, cops opened fire and struck Zass, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Officers said his weapon was a realistic-looking imitation of a Sig Sauer handgun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new social media post, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/09\/us-news\/mamdanis-tardy-response-to-two-nypd-shootings-draws-blowback-including-a-miffed-commish-tisch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani said<\/a> the shootings were \u201cdevastating to all New Yorkers\u201d and that \u201cI know many are eager for answers. The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation \u2014 I will work with Commissioner Tisch to ensure this is as thorough and swift as possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>His use of the word \u201cdevastating\u201d and the emphasis on an \u201cinternal investigation\u201d were reportedly seen by many in the NYPD as casting doubt on the officers\u2019 decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Tisch also noted that there would be internal probes, which are standard, she added that she believed the officers acted properly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, the incidents marked a \u201cwelcome to the major leagues\u201d moment for Mamdani.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The size of the force and the huge civilian population mean citizen-police clashes are inevitable and frequent.<\/p>\n<p>Not all lead to violence, but the potential is always there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 20234, cops made more than 260,000 arrests, and used some level of force more than 11,000 times, according to a department report summarized in The City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Weapons-related arrests are the most volatile, and police were involved in 14 fatal shootings that year, the report says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vast scope of the encounters and the potential for violence is such that a mayor who instinctively distrusts the police will soon find himself undermining their performance and at war with the rank-and-file.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be de Blasio\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That approach might initially play well for Mamdani\u2019s political base, but long-term, it carries the seeds of political and civic disaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If he doesn\u2019t have their backs, police officers, rookies and veterans alike, are more likely to walk away from trouble than tackle it. <\/p>\n<p>That could lead to a city swamped by crime, which would doom Mamdani\u2019s tenure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, his past means he is already viewed with suspicion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A key factor is that Mamdani has rarely if ever recognized the risks of policing, and identified himself as anti-cop years ago by calling them \u201cracist\u201d and supporting the \u201cdefund\u201d movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In those ways, he resembles Mayor Putz, a\u200ak\u200aa <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/01\/us-news\/ex-nyc-mayor-bill-de-blasio-brings-new-girlfriend-south-tucson-mayor-roxanna-valenzuela-to-zohran-mamdanis-inauguration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill de Blasio<\/a>, whom Mamdani foolishly called his favorite mayor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio\u2019s relationship with the NYPD became so toxic that cops turned their backs on him at a police funeral.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Mamdani is as smart as his supporters believe he is, he will ignore de Blasio\u2019s approach and learn from three other predecessors, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/15\/us-news\/adams-tells-mamdani-to-keep-homelessness-under-control\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Adams<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/20\/us-news\/giuliani-mamdanis-plan-to-stop-clearing-homeless-encampments-will-be-a-disaster-for-nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rudy Giuliani<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/10\/us-news\/bloomberg-for-mayor-half-of-nyc-voters-want-billionaire-to-mount-return-run-amid-city-hall-chaos-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Bloomberg<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>They all wisely took the position that police, like all citizens, are innocent until proven guilty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That stance is the minimum that law enforcement officers need and deserve. <\/p>\n<p>After all, they are risking their lives to defend ours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The least a mayor, or for that matter, any New Yorker, can do is give them the benefit of the doubt until the facts are gathered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To do otherwise is to do what Mamdani did about the Minnesota incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His fact-free overreaction echoed the ICE-hating words of dopey <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/05\/us-news\/tim-walz-abruptly-drops-out-of-minnesota-governors-race-in-wake-of-alleged-billion-dollar-fraud-scandal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gov.
