{"id":96645,"date":"2026-01-11T21:04:03","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/96645\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T21:04:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:04:03","slug":"liberal-nyc-pols-plans-to-give-themselves-16-raises-squashed-but-theyre-not-giving-up-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/96645\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal NYC pols&#8217; plans to give themselves 16% raises squashed &#8211;but they&#8217;re not giving up yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new City Council speaker squashed a plan by lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/07\/opinion\/city-councils-big-24k-pay-hike-is-just-a-slice-of-its-self-dealing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">council members<\/a> to give themselves a big fat pay raise \u2014 but the pols aren\u2019t giving up their dreams of bigger salaries just yet, The Post has learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newly minted Speaker Julie Menin was adamant about stopping the politicians behind a bill pushing to fatten council paychecks 16% on the taxpayer dime, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body has never done their own pay raise, so that wasn\u2019t a path she was comfortable with\u201d a source close to Menin said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants to make sure they\u2019re doing it in a way that is accountable and transparent,\u201d the source added, noting the push to vote on the current legislation was coming mostly from the progressive caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newly minted City Council Speaker Julie Menin squashed council\u2019s plan to give themselves a pay raise. Gerardo Romo \/ NYC Council<\/p>\n<p>But they may not be the end of the politicians seeking to give themselves more spending cash.<\/p>\n<p>A compromise from the raise-hungry liberals may be to push new Mayor Zohran Mamdani to form a commission that will be told to fast track considering raises.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the council has introduced legislation calling on the mayor to form a Quadrennial commission consisting of three appointees \u2013 which would then give a recommendation on salary increases and dollar amounts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/personality\/2025\/12\/breaking-down-90-years-pay-raises-new-york-city-council-members\/410115\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first commission<\/a> to recommend pay raises for elected officials was formed in 1987 \u2014 the council has had five pay raises \u2014 most recently in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The current bill, intro 1493 sponsored by Council member Nantasha Williams, has sought to boost members\u2019 salaries from $148,500 to $172,500. But after Menin knocked down the effort, Williams said she\u2019ll amend the bill so the council cannot directly vote on increasing themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City Council bill is not axed,\u201d Williams told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants to do it in a way that is accountable and transparent,\u201d a source close to Menin told The Post.
