Caving to progressive activists, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill late last month that will all but guarantee more child abuse goes unreported \u2014 in the name of fixing \u201cracial disparities\u201d in the child-welfare system.<\/p>\n
The new law bars callers to the city Administration for Children\u2019s Services from leaving tips anonymously<\/a> \u2014 on the supposed grounds that false tips help drive \u201cinexcusable racial disparities that disproportionately impact Black and Brown families by leading to unnecessary interactions with child welfare services.\u201d<\/p>\n What this really means is that more kids will be abused \u2014 and some killed \u2014 with minority children suffering the most. <\/p>\n Advocates insist that anonymity lets abusive exes and vindictive or racist landlords, neighbors and so on use ACS to harass innocent parents with \u201cdisruptive\u201d probes.<\/p>\n One such activist, Shalonda Curtis-Hackett, vows: \u201cWe won\u2019t stop until every family in this state can sleep more peacefully, knowing that one part of this harmful system is no longer allowed to operate unchecked.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201charmful system\u201d that . . . rescues abused kids? <\/p>\n \t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n Forcing tippers to hand over their names and phone numbers, even with promises that their identities won\u2019t be revealed publicly, won\u2019t just discourage bogus tips; it will also stop genuine reports from concerned grandparents, neighbors or friends who fear being found out.<\/p>\n That will mean more kids left in dangerous or neglectful situations \u2014 especially minority kids.<\/p>\n As Naomi Schaefer Riley has pointed out in these pages, black children are more than three times as likely to die by abuse and neglect <\/a>than their white peers; whatever the reasons for this, it means that preventing abuse will necessarily \u201cdisproportionately impact\u201d black families.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Among the horrifying cases in New York City these last few years: Jahmeik Modlin, age 4, who was slowly starved to death <\/a>in an apartment stocked with food; Jalayah Eason Branch, age 6, was hung by her wrists and beaten to death by her mother.<\/a><\/p>\n And those were kids that ACS knew about; they needed more action from ACS, not less. Yet fewer tips will mean more vulnerable kids living through hell never get on ACS\u2019 radar in the first place. <\/p>\n If the tip is false, ACS case workers are perfectly able to determine that with a simple visit; that slight inconvenience to innocent parents is an incredibly small price to pay for keeping kids safe.<\/p>\n The advocates are OK with more children suffering abuse simply to make the statistics less \u201cdisproportionate\u201d \u2014 and now they\u2019ve gotten the Legislature and the gov to agree.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a wonder how these people sleep at night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Caving to progressive activists, Gov.
