When our \u201cClassifieds\u201d section debuted in 1971, the listings, in their way, reflected the moment: There was a polar-bear-pelt rug priced at $2,500, a build-your-own-dulcimer kit, wild rice from Minnesota going for $4 a pound, and \u201cScientology jewelry.\u201d The majority of the ads were for services, and by the \u201990s, that included yacht rentals, psychics, and gift-basket-makers. At one point, there were eight listings for party caricaturists for hire. While the demand for the last has waned, New Yorkers\u2019 desire for other people\u2019s stuff has not.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we\u2019re bringing back our \u201cClassifieds\u201d just for New York\u2013based subscribers. Each edition will have a theme (\u201cI Love It, But It\u2019s Just Not \u2018Me\u2019\u201d is our inaugural installment<\/a>). Unlike in the \u201970s, there\u2019s no fee to submit a listing, and it\u2019s up to the buyer and seller to coordinate payment and pickup. And unlike the listings on Facebook Marketplace or Depop, our \u201cClassifieds\u201d give you the chance to engage other New York readers. As one of our first ads in 1971 read, \u201cWouldn\u2019t you feel better renting your house to someone who reads your magazine?\u201d<\/p>\n
