The Justice Department was forced to use the \u201clegal process\u201d to obtain information related to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell\u2019s<\/a> congressional testimony about renovations at the central bank after he \u201cignored\u201d requests from prosecutors, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pirro, the top federal prosecutor in Washington, DC, downplayed Powell\u2019s shocking Sunday night suggestion <\/a>that he was facing a criminal indictment after grand jury subpoenas were served to the Federal Reserve related to his June 2025 testimony to the Senate Banking Committee about the renovation project, which has been panned by President Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Trump has complained that the $2.5 billion project, started in 2022, has been mismanaged by Powell and is over budget by roughly $1.5 billion. REUTERS<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States Attorney\u2019s Office contacted the Federal Reserve on multiple occasions to discuss cost overruns and the chairman\u2019s congressional testimony, but were ignored, necessitating the use of legal process \u2014 which is not a threat,\u201d Pirro wrote on X.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe word \u2018indictment\u2019 has come out of Mr. Powell\u2019s mouth, no one else\u2019s,\u201d the US attorney continued. \u201cNone of this would have happened if they had just responded to our outreach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pirro said her office would make \u201cdecisions based on the merits, nothing more and nothing less.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe agree with the chairman of the Federal Reserve that no one is above the law, and that is why we expect his full cooperation,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Powell, in a rare video message confirming the DOJ probe,\u00a0described the criminal investigation as an \u201cunprecedented action\u201d that came as a direct response to the Federal Reserve \u201csetting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell<\/a> for being slow to slash interest rates.<\/p>\n

In his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, Powell denied the revamp included luxury features<\/a> \u2013 such as a VIP dining room, new marble, new water features and roof terrace gardens \u2013 laid out in project planning documents approved in 2021.<\/p>\n
