The items included a royal sapphire necklace, a royal emerald necklace and a diadem worn by Empress Eug\u00e9nie, the wife of Napoleon III, France\u2019s 19th-century ruler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-caption svelte-v3m00m\">The Apollo Gallery in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-credit svelte-v3m00m\">Photo by Stephane De Sakutin \/ AFP<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\">In their haste to leave, the robbers dropped a ninth item, which the authorities recovered later: Empress Eug\u00e9nie\u2019s crown, which features 1,354 diamonds, 1,136 rose-cut diamonds and 56 emeralds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\">Five museum staff members were either in or near the gilded Apollo Gallery. Following the Louvre\u2019s security protocol, they contacted the police, \u201cprioritizing the protection of people,\u201d according to a statement by the French ministry of culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\">Security guards evacuated the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-credit svelte-v3m00m\">@gregraspoutine via Reuters<\/p>\n<p>The Escape<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\">The thieves left the museum by climbing back down the ladder, then made their getaway with two other members of the team who were waiting on motor scooters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\">On Monday, the police were still searching for the thieves.
