CITYWIDE \u2014 FOLLOWING ICE\u2019S DETENTION<\/a> OF A CITY COUNCIL STAFFER, Brooklyn Congressmember Dan Goldman, D-10, and Council Speaker Julie Menin released a joint statement on their endeavors to get the employee released from custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a City Council staffer was detained by ICE yesterday while attending a routine immigration check-in, our offices immediately moved to coordinate with advocates at the New York Immigration Coalition and the outstanding lawyers at the New York Legal Assistance Group who filed an emergency habeas petition last night,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWe have confirmed this morning that the staffer is being held in New York State, confirming that the habeas petition was properly filed and preventing his removal from the State until his petition is resolved by a court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Menin and Goldman added, \u201cAs part of his application to work for the Council, the staffer cleared the standard background check conducted for all applicants. The Council has been unable to contact the staffer but is working to get in touch with the staffer\u2019s immigration counsel.\u201d Menin and Goldman promised updates as they become appropriate.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has claimed that the City Council staffer had no work authorization, a point that local elected officials refute.<\/p>\n
