A little messy, but it\u2019s home<\/p>\n
I\u2019m thinking about my city. We\u2019re the best. No. 1. And we\u2019ve been taking a lot of heat. And that\u2019s before Mayor Zero Crapdammy.<\/p>\n
Lincoln Center,\u00a0Rock Center<\/a>, World Trade Center. We got\u00a0Woody,\u00a0Dustin,\u00a0Gayle,\u00a0Donald.<\/p>\n Rush hour. Tourists, cameras slung across their chests like the Order of the Garter, staring up at the Freedom Tower, jostled, checking a film crew down the street, saying: \u201cMaybe the crowds are too much for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Tolerant of it all, a Madison Avenue type dressed in Armani and attitude adds: \u201cLike East Side, West Side, all around the town, like somebody sent for you?\u201d<\/p>\n Middle of a\u00a0movie scene shooting<\/a>\u00a0on the street, this short guy, occupied with getting from Point A to Point B, walks right into it. Nobody misses a beat. Just kept delivering their lines. Muttered a passerby: \u201cWe\u2019re the No. 1 city. We deserve more crime.\u201d A crew member overhearing that said: \u201cGood line. I\u2019ll find a spot to stick that in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Go, get outta here<\/p>\n Listen world, knock it off. Where else could you wait on line for a john next to\u00a0Letterman<\/a>, or sit next to a movie star picking up after his dog at Starbucks? Your Arizona town has St. Pat\u2019s, MSG, the Yankees?<\/p>\n We got culture. In Kansas they only got that in yogurt. But we also got the best hot dogs and steaks. Thieves and the New York Post.<\/p>\n Everything we have is the best. More French hairdressers than in Paris. Better Italian eateries than in Rome. So many lawyers, there\u2019s not enough scams to go around. Maybe we got a few muggers, but at least they\u2019re professionals. Only a few have been in the can. We\u2019re rude? Yeah, right. At least we\u2019re good at it.\u00a0You got Broadway<\/a>? Central Park? All you have is a bus\u00a0out! And, let nobody ever forget, we have Saks, at least temporarily. We used to have Klein\u2019s, Ohrbach\u2019s, places that sold bras, panties, garter belts that nobody wears anymore. Only in fashion these days are your boobs.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t like us? So get on your rented bike and pedal out. Wheel back to where the moon is as high as your unemployed friend. Catch your local road company version of its misspelled \u201cOthelo.\u201d Buy one of their locally made T-shirts advertising Harry Truman. Or join your friends with tattoos.<\/p>\n Ink-lined to make a mark<\/p>\n TATTOOS:\u00a0LL Cool J\u00a0has \u201cRespect\u201d on his left shoulder .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Stephen Baldwin? Chinese signs somewhere .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Kid Rock? Detroit Tigers logo on his right arm .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0P.\u00a0Diddy? A newspaper has less print than his bones. One upper arm has writing underneath which he never let me read .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Justin Timberlake? Initials JJ on ankles and a cross on the left shoulder .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Kelly Osbourne? Heart tattoo<\/a>\u00a0on lower left stomach, angel wings on her back, star at the base of the neck, pink heart on little finger, anchor under left forearm. A dictionary has less to read .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0David Duchovny? Compass design on one ankle with N, S, E,\u00a0West, his daughter\u2019s name spelled out .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Eminem? Daughter\u00a0Hailie\u2019s portrait on one arm, others on other places too assorted for me to locate .\u2009.\u2009.\u00a0Nicky Hilton: \u201cHilton\u201d on her back and a heart on the right wrist.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t have tattoos. If I did they would say \u201cI love you. I love this country. I love this city. I love this newspaper.
