The nurses are striking for better pay, more staff and improved workplace protections. Talks with management have stalled, which led to the strike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137824855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/union-nysna-lloyd-mitchell-01-13-26.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"NURSES STRIKE: Caregivers continue pickets at NYC hospitals; firings reported at Mount Sinai 2\"  \/>Nurses continue to strike on Jan. 13, 2026, on day two of the nurses stike outside Mount Sinai Hospital.Photo by Lloyd Mitchell<\/p>\n<p>The union also alleged on Jan. 13 that Mount Sinai unlawfully fired three labor and delivery nurses, which NYSNA representatives called an act of \u201cintimidation\u201d while contract negotiations were ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of addressing the most\u00a0important issues, patient and nurse safety, hospital management has cowardly and\u00a0unlawfully\u00a0disciplined and terminated\u00a0NYSNA\u00a0nurses.\u00a0Management\u2019s\u00a0disrespectful\u00a0treatment of frontline nurse heroes is despicable, but they cannot silence our\u00a0union\u00a0voice.<\/p>\n<p>Mount Sinai stated that NYSA\u2019s allegation regarding the firings is false.\n<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a hospital system spokesperson also said 20% of nurses on Monday \u2014 the first day of the strike \u2014 crossed the picket line and came to work. They anticipate that more caretakers will do the same in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals and emergency rooms remain open during nurses\u2019 strike\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Management from the affected hospitals said they have been preparing for the strike by securing temp agency nurses. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency in NYC on Jan. 9, ordering hospitals to prepare for \u201csevere staffing shortages\u201d due to the strike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137824858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/tuba-lloyd-mitchell-01-13-26.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"507\" title=\"NURSES STRIKE: Caregivers continue pickets at NYC hospitals; firings reported at Mount Sinai 3\"  \/>Nurses on strike outside Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan on Jan. 13, 2026.Photo by Lloyd Mitchell<\/p>\n<p>According to the order, supplemental staffing was added to hospitals and other healthcare facilities to ensure patient care. Mount Sinai said it added 1,400 specialized nurses to its staff. The NYS Health Department will have additional staff on site at all the locations throughout the duration of the strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear when the strike will end at this point, but all of the hospitals and their emergency rooms are open. amNewYork spoke to patients at NewYork-Presbyterian Millstein, most of whom said they support the nurses in their labor fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani was at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/nurses-strike-manhattan-picket-line-01122025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hospital\u2019s picket line<\/a> on Monday to urge management to reach an agreement with the nurses. He referenced the substantial finances of the affected hospitals, which are privately owned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137824530\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768351053_374_5864b52e-fd0f-4ea3-87a4-fdbcece1eb02.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"607\" title=\"NURSES STRIKE: Caregivers continue pickets at NYC hospitals; firings reported at Mount Sinai 4\"  \/>It wasn\u2019t just onsite patients who offered their support to the thousands of nurses on the streets outside hospitals across the city; newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani also lent his voice to their cause. Speaking outside New York-Presbyterian Millstein, Mamdani urged the hospitals to reach an agreement.Photo by Dean Moses<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no shortage of wealth in the healthcare industry, especially so at the three privately operated hospital groups at which nurses are striking,\u201d the mayor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some area elected officials, including Rep. Yvette Clarke of Brooklyn, joined Mamdani in defending the nurses.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur nurses will always be the bedrock of our healthcare system, and they deserve a fair contract that recognizes their contributions and respects their instrumental role in keeping New Yorkers safe and healthy,\u2019 she said in a statement. \u201cAnything less is simply unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, both management and the nurses encourage patients to go to the hospital or emergency room if they need care.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The nurses strike is on its second day in NYC.
