While frigid temperatures may deter most, ice fishing enthusiasts use the cold temperatures as the perfect opportunity to get out on the ice. This weekend Erie welcomes those braving the cold to the Flagship Ice Open which will take place this Saturday.

The event will be hosted by the Western PA Team Bass Series and Western PA Hardwater, Angler will get the chance to spend the day on the ice at Misery Bay.

“The Flagship Ice Open continues to grow each year and seeing 101 teams compete last year was an incredible milestone,” said Billy Hines, tournament director. “It’s an event that brings the ice fishing community together, and we are looking forward to another great turnout.”

The directors of the tournament are expecting around 100 teams to register and registration starts at 5:30 a.m. in the Misery Bay parking lot. Teams can consist of one or two team members. The team as a whole will be permitted and eight-fish limit with any combination of crappie, perch, and bluegill or panfish.

It will take place from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. with weigh-ins at the end of the competition.

“Cold temperatures in Erie create ideal conditions for winter sports,” said Mark Jeanneret, executive director for the Erie Sports Commission. “Erie is a true four-season destination, making it an ideal location for year-round sports and events such as the Flagship Ice Open.”
