Three players scored in double figures as the University of Scranton women’s basketball team remained unbeaten with a 76-35 win over Drew University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday at the John Long Center.
Katie Gorski scored 19 points for the second-ranked Lady Royals (11-0 league, 18-0 overall). Elizabeth Bennett added 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kaci Kranson contributed 16 points.
Drew was within 10-9 with 3:04 left in the first quarter, but Scranton put together a 16-2 run to take control, 26-11, with 7:11 left in the second quarter. The Lady Royals led at halftime, 40-20, then scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to put the game away.
Keystone 65, PSU-Berks 43: At La Plume, Keystone College snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Penn State-Berks in a United East Conference game at Gambal Athletic Center.
The Lady Giants used a 27-9 advantage in the second quarter to take control and build a 36-23 halftime lead.
Tayana Bibbins led Keystone (3-7, 4-17) with 20 points. Phaneirra Barnett had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Krista Cortazar added 11 points and Angelise Sanchez chipped in 10 points.
Union College 92, Lackawanna 36: At Scranton on Tuesday, Lackawanna College lost a NJCAA Region 19 Division II game to No. 13 Union College at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Union scored the game’s first 46 points. Lackawanna did not score until a 3-pointer by Desiree Nales with 4:32 left in the second quarter. Alania Ortiz led the Lady Falcons (3-8, 7-12) with 11 points and Canyah Randle had 11 rebounds.
Men’s basketball
At Madison, New Jersey, Drew University scored the first nine points of the second half to erase a five-point deficit and pull away to a 79-65 victory over the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference game at Baldwin Gym.
Scranton closed the first half on a 15-2 run to take a 38-33 halftime lead. But Drew started fast in the second half, outscoring the Royals, 46-27.
Charlie Thornton led four Rangers in double figures with 20 points. Valley View graduate Eli Yusavage added 16 points.
Jon Spatola had 16 points and five assists for the Royals (8-3, 15-3). Brendan Carr and Sammy Tornabene each added 13 points and Josias Carbon chipped in 12 points. Tornabene grabbed six rebounds.
Penn State-Berks 86, Keystone 78: At La Plume, Penn State-Berks led by as many as 21 points in the first half, then withstood a second-half comeback bid by Keystone College to earn a United East Conference win at Gambal Athletic Center.
Trailing, 79-66, with 2:41 left, Keystone got to within 83-78 with 23 seconds left. But Berks hit three free throws in the final 21 seconds to secure the win.
Jden Golding led the Giants (3-5, 5-14) with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ahmodrion Jones also had 16 points along with five assists. P.J. Murphy scored 20 points and Demetrius Thomas grabbed 17 rebounds.
Westchester CC 76, Lackawanna 68: At Scranton, Westchester Community College scored the game’s final eight points to earn a nonregion victory over Lackawanna College at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Two free throws by Jaksa Pejovic tied the score at 68 with 2:13 remaining. But Lackawanna did not score the rest of the way. Westchester had a putback, a 3-pointer and three free throws to take the win.
Pejovic led the Falcons (11-9) with 10 points and nine rebounds. Noah Elias and Xavier Spears followed with nine points apiece.
