A struck gas line from one house along Ferdinand Street prompted evacuations of nearby homes.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Officials are investigating a gas leak in Lackawanna County.

According to Scranton Assistant Fire Chief Jack Davis, a call was reported around 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a struck gas line from one house along Ferdinand Street. When crews arrived, they found free-flowing gas off to the side of the house.

UGI shut off the gas shortly after. Two other nearby homes had to evacuate and will be able to return soon. 

The two people living in the home where the gas leak started will be evacuated for a while until the gas line is repaired.

Police are investigating the cause.Â
