Opportunity House will host the 24th annual Souper Bowl on Monday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading.
Stacy Perlaki, Director of Development at Opportunity House, said, “Souper Bowl continues to be one of the most anticipated events of the year. It’s been a cherished tradition for 24 years. Our sold-out status is a testament to how our community supports our mission.” All proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services at Opportunity House.
“During the winter months, the need for emergency shelter increases, along with demand for our transitional housing and Code Blue housing programs,” said Alyssa Bushkie, CEO of Opportunity House. “Events like Souper Bowl provide the critical funding needed to ensure individuals and families experiencing homelessness have access to safe shelter, support services, and pathways to stable housing.”
Guests will sample a diverse array of soups from26 restaurants throughout Berks County. Attendees will select a one-of-a-kind pottery bowl created by students from local school districts, including Allegheny Evangelical Lutheran Church, Boyertown Middle School, Exeter High School, Friedens Lutheran Church, Googleworks, Hamburg Area High School, Kutztown High School, Kutztown University, Muhlenberg High School, Oley Valley High School, Schuylkill Valley Middle School, Twin Valley Middle School, and Wilson High School donated bowls.
The Silent Auction features handcrafted bowls by local artists, allowing attendees to take home a unique piece of Berks County artistry. The evening concludes with the announcement of the People’s Choice Award and the Chef’s Choice Award Winners. The People’s Choice is voted on by guests attending the event, and the Chef’s Choice Award is voted on by all the chefs from participating restaurants.
Opportunity House provides emergency shelter for more than 700 men, women, families, and Veterans each year in their two locations: Reading, PA, and Pottstown, PA. The organization offers support services to help individuals experiencing homelessness achieve stable housing. Opportunity House provides both transitional and supportive housing to over 100 individuals. The Second Street Learning Center and Patton Avenue Learning Centers offer Keystone Star quality childcare to more than 200 children annually.
Additionally, the organization diverts over one million pounds from landfills through its OppShop thrift store and recycling efforts.
