The group says the new name reflects the region’s shared connection to Lake Erie and was chosen as part of a member-driven rebrand.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments – widely known as TMACOG – has approved a new name as part of an organizational rebrand.

The group announced Friday that it will now be known as the Lake Erie West Regional Council.

The vote was approved during TMACOG’s 2026 Winter General Assembly, held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg.

In a statement shared publicly, the organization said the name change is meant to strengthen its identity and align with its long-term strategy.

“This decision strengthens our identity, aligns with our long-term strategy, and positions us to empower connections and amplify impact in the years ahead,” the organization said in a post announcing the change.

TMACOG leaders described the name change as a member-driven decision and said it is intended to be more inclusive.

“Our new name represents not only our geography, but the greatest resource we share,” an email sent by President Sandy Spang said. “Lake Erie is the thread that connects our communities, our economies, and our future.”

Lake Erie focus highlighted at Friday’s meeting

Friday’s General Assembly meeting also included a keynote conversation centered on Lake Erie’s economic impact across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

Speakers included Jon Altenberg, president and CEO of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, and Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, who discussed broader regional efforts focused on economic development and water protection across the Great Lakes region.

What happens next

Officials said the new name will begin appearing immediately on the organization’s website, online platforms and documents.

Other updates, including email addresses, business cards and additional materials, will roll out more gradually over time.

The organization will continue its work connecting local governments and communities across the region under the new name.
