Athletes competing on the world stage will appear on the big screen during a Winter Olympics watch party Feb. 7 at Coal Creek Park.
Erie Parks and Recreation will host the free event from 9 a.m. to noon at the park, 575 Kattell St, the morning after the opening ceremony for the Winter Games.
From 9 to 10 a.m., attendees can participate in a “learn to play hockey” session led by the Boulder Hockey Club at the nearby Erie Ice Rink. Additional activities available throughout the event at Coal Creek Park include an inflatable alpine slide, curling, and a podium-style photo booth, according to the department’s special events coordinator, Brandon Grasmick.
Two food trucks will also be onsite: Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck and The Crepe Outdoors.
A 17-foot-by-10-foot mobile LED video wall will stream audio and video from NBC’s live broadcast throughout the morning, Grasmick said. Competitions scheduled for that day include U.S. versus Finland women’s hockey, women’s freeski slopestyle, women’s ski jumping, men’s single luge, men’s freeski slopestyle, U.S. versus South Korea curling, men’s snowboarding big air and men’s short track speed skating.
Attendees are encouraged to check the weather before attending and dress warmly. Portable heaters will be placed throughout the event to serve as warming zones.
“As with all outdoor events, we will closely monitor weather conditions and follow our established weather policies,” Grasmick said.
Those interested in attending can call the department’s weather hotline at 303-926-2550 (option 4) for updates on closures or delays.
The Erie Ice Rink will also be open for those looking to lace up their skates. Admission to skate at the rink is $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under.
