PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — One person died after a structure fire broke out at a duplex in Parkersburg Thursday night.
Wood County Dispatch received the call at 10:34 p.m. for a fire on the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
One male victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The other occupant of the property escaped and was assisted by the Red Cross.
The fire originated in the kitchen area. The cause of the fire is unknown, but there were no working smoke alarms in the home.
Fire Chief Jason Matthews said working alarms can help save lives in the event of a fire, buying precious time.
Firefighters dealt with cold temperatures and ice during the response, but no firefighters were injured.
The Parkersburg Fire Department, Parkersburg Police Department and Camden Clark EMS all responded to the scene. The State Fire Marshall is assisting with the investigation, and the cause of the fire is still unclear.
