A gas leak late Saturday night forced the evacuation of an Exeter Township neighborhood, according to police.

Exeter police gave this account:

Just before midnight, police received a report of a possible gas leak in the 1300 block of Claire Drive for a report of a possible gas leak. UGI Utilities Inc. representatives confirmed it was an active gas leak.

As a precaution, police and members of the Exeter Township Volunteer Fire Department conducted door-to-door notifications and had residents evacuated residents from homes along Claire Drive and Budd Street. The affected neighborhood is south of Route 422 in the eastern end of the township.

Township Emergency Management Coordinators established a temporary shelter for displaced residents at the Dunn Community Center while UGI worked to address the leak and secure the area.

The area was determined to be safe shortly after 3 a.m. Power was restored to the affected area, and residents were able to return to their homes.UGI is providing space heaters to residents who remain without gas service as repairs continue.

No injuries were reported.
