Nolan Renwick scored his second goal of the season at 9:38 of the second period, which proved the game-winner as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rolled to a 6-2 victory over rival Lehigh Valley on Sunday afternoon in Allentown.
It marked the fifth win of the season over the Phantoms, improved the Penguins to 29-12-2-2 and moved them within three points of red hot Providence in the Atlantic Division.
Aidan McDonough scored his ninth goal of the season at 14:30 of the first period to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Matt Dumba and Chase Pietila recorded the assists.
Lehigh Valley’s Lane Pederson tied the game at 4:23 of the second period before Renwick found the back of the net to put the Penguins ahead, 2-1.
In the third period, Bokondji Imama, Avery Hayes and Owen Pickering all scored to put the Pens ahead, 5-1. After the Phantoms cut the lead to 5-2, Rafael Harvey-Pinard capped the scoring for the Penguins with his 12th of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Matt Dumba recorded four assists, while goalie Joel Blomqvist earned the win in goal with 23 saves on 25 shots.
The Penguins return home Wednesday night at 7:05 to take on the Hershey Bears.
