Pennsylvania American Water crews completed repairs and restored service to 55 customers Sunday around 11 a.m. after a break in a 135-year-old water main led to the closure of some roads near the 600 block of Ash Street on Saturday, said Alana Roberts, a spokeswoman for the water company.

Reported around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, the break occurred in a 16-inch-diameter water main dating to 1891, water company officials said.

Customers in Scranton, Dickson City and the Abingtons received a message from the water company Sunday notifying them that emergency repairs were completed and they may resume normal water use.

Customers — even those who don’t live in the immediate area of the break — were alerted they may have discolored water due to the size and complexity of the system, officials said.

Anyone with discolored water should run cold-water taps only, at the lowest level of their house, for about three to five minutes until the water becomes clear, officials said.
