The Clarks Summit Festival of Ice celebrated its 22nd year with an ice-carving contest honoring the late firefighter Frank Miller.

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. — On Sunday, the ice carving contest returned to Lackawanna County.

Local firefighters got to sawing through the ice at the 22nd annual Clarks Summit Festival of Ice.

New this year, the fire and ice chili cook-off, where departments fired up their best recipes to compete.

A fireman’s axe as a trophy, given to the winning department of the ice carving contest.

It’s called Frank Miller’s Axe, in honor of the late volunteer firefighter who passed away in 2021.

“Frank served as a volunteer firefighter for over 60 years, was a part-time police officer in Jessup, and also a member of our armed forces in the army. We just wanted to honor our firemen. We thought Frank was a great example of service to our community,” said Billy Mulligan of Mulligan Financial Services.

Newswatch 16’s Stacy Lange was the emcee for the event.

She tells us Chinchilla took home the trophy for the ice carving contest, and Newton Ransom won top spot for the chili cook-off.
