Water main breaks across Philadelphia are impacting residents, creating flooding, water outages, and a lack of heat in bitterly cold temperatures.

The latest happened early Monday morning in Overbrook Park near the intersection of City and Haverford Avenues.

Water flowed down the streets, creating a slushy, icy mess.

On Sunday, JD McGillicuddy’s in Manayunk had to close due to flooding. Crews spent hours suctioning water out of the basement.

Due to the bitter cold temperatures and the amount of water, they had to lay down salt to prevent what they could from icing over.

A similar scene was unfolding in North Philadelphia on Saturday.

“It was water everywhere, it looked like a mud slide out here,” said Dominique Cooper of North Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Water Department responded to a water main break along the 1500 block of Oakdale Street.

“There were two feet of water in my basement. No heat, no hot water. The gas company was out here all morning. They said water got so high up to the tank that he’s unable to light it,” said Charles Leonard of North Philadelphia.

Residents shared photos of their flooded basements, with water several feet high and floating storage containers.

PGW says four properties now have appliance damage and gas has been turned off since they’re unsafe to use, leaving some residents without heat.

“It’s very cold, my temp says 48 degrees,” said Racquia Richardson of North Philadelphia.

Action News reached out to the Philadelphia Water Department regarding these breaks, but are still waiting to hear back.
