Colorado Springs couple gets engaged at Pennsylvania Groundhog Day event

  • February 3, 2026

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Valentine’s Day is around the corner, but there’s a love story that involves a different holiday.

A Colorado Springs couple is now engaged following a proposal under Punxsutawney Phil’s shadow that ended up happening live on the news in Pennsylvania.

While the groundhog was busy predicting six more weeks of winter, Cooper Norton proposed to his girlfriend of five years, Abigail Tillman.

“I was so surprised,” Tillman continued. “I did not see it coming whatsoever, but it was super sweet. I was so excited.”

The unique proposal warmed everyone’s hearts while they were out in the cold for the Groundhog Day event.

“It’s actually Abigail’s favorite holiday,” said Norton.

You may be thinking, someone’s favorite holiday is Groundhog Day?!

“It’s just so niche, I don’t know,” Tillman continued. “It’s weird, and I enjoy the weirdness of it.”

There’s your explanation, and a Groundhog Day engagement is something Norton said was in the works for a while.

“Probably since right after Groundhog Day last year,” Norton continued. “My goal was to make it the most deserving proposal for her.”

What wasn’t necessarily part of the plan was proposing on live TV. An 11 News sister station in Altoona aired the special proposal for everyone to see.

When the station asked the couple to do an interview, Norton took the opportunity to get down on one knee.

“I watched the video back and jaw literally dropped,” Tillman continued. “Thanks to family and friends for keeping the secret cause they did really good.”

A special moment the couple can look back on for the rest of their lives and play at their wedding, which plans for will soon begin.

“I’m just really excited to start this next process and get the wedding all ready to go,” said Norton.

First, though, they’re taking time to celebrate the engagement.

“He’s been waiting for me to be out of school to do this, so everything is ties up nicely into a bow,” Tillman continued. “Excited to celebrate with friends and family.”
