Syracuse, N.Y. — A fatal crash on Erie Boulevard West in Syracuse started with vehicle pursuit by Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputies early Tuesday morning, according to a law enforcement source.

A pursuit by deputies was reported at 2:30 a.m. at Avery Avenue and West Genesee Street in the city, according to the Onondaga Count 911 Center. That’s about a mile from where the crash was reported on Erie Boulevard between West Genesee and South Geddes streets.

The fatal crash is being investigated by the state Attorney General’s Office, according to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick.

The AG’s office investigates any incidents involving police and a death. It does not investigate fatal traffic accidents unless they involve officers.

Thomas Newton, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, did not respond to questions about whether the fatal crash involved a pursuit by deputies.

Newton said Erie Boulevard West is closed between West Genesee Street and South Geddes Street.

The road has been closed since about 2:45 a.m., according to 511NY reports.

Drivers are being urged to use alternate routes and expect delays.

The street is expected to reopen around 9 a.m., Newton said.
