While we were all pretty sure Phil would see his shadow, six more weeks of winter is not a reason to be cooped up and bored! There are so many great things happening in and around the city this weekend. So take a scroll through the list below and plan some quality family time:
Through Feb. 27: Free Educational Movies at the Rangos Theater, 12:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Get lost in the magic of the largest movie screen in Pittsburgh with FREE educational movies included with Kamin Science Center general admission each day through Feb. 27. Movies are first-come, first-served and cannot be booked in advance. Secure your seat prior to showtime at the Rangos Giant Cinema entrance on the ground floor of the Science Center. Friday, Feb. 6-Sunday, Feb. 8: Monster Jam at PPG Paints Arena
Watch as 12,000-pound trucks stand on two wheels and fly through the air. See the world’s most popular trucks like Grave Digger, El Toro Loco, Sparkle Smash and more only at Monster Jam. Tickets start at $29.
Friday, Feb. 6: Wiggles and Giggles Story Time at the Penn Hills Library, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Guests will wiggle and giggle together as friends share age-appropriate and developmentally-appropriate interactive stories, songs, movement activities and fingerplays. This free event is designed for ages 2-3 and their caregivers. Find more info here.
Friday, Feb. 6: Tree ID Hike at McConnells Mill State Park, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
If you love McConnells Mill in the summer, wait until you see the waterfalls covered with ice and snow. This weekend, join park staff for an all-ages guided walk through the grassy areas adjoining the picnic grounds, where you can visit a variety of trees and use forestry techniques and tools. Friday, Feb. 6: Friday Crafternoon in the Fab Lab at CarnegieOne, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Kick off the weekend with creativity! Kids ages 3-12 with an adult caregiver are invited to the Fab Lab for a free, fun, hands-on crafternoon every Friday. Kids will explore different materials, tools and simple maker projects, while building creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence. Each session features a guided craft or open-ended making time in a supportive, playful environment. Find more details here.
Saturday, Feb. 7: Take Your Child to the Library Day at Whitehall Library, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This special celebration is designed to highlight the joy of reading, playing and learning together. Families can enjoy a Storytime with WQED, a fun activity with the Whitehall Recreation Department, and also get creative at a Pop-In Art Party and explore Playdough STEAM. The fun also includes button making, raffles, snacks, a character visit and giveaways throughout the event. Kids will also be able to meet Carl the Collector from the hit PBS Kids show. Saturday, Feb. 7: Winterfest at Ohiopyle State Park, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bring your own sled to hit the sledding hill. Free snowshoe and cross-country demonstrations will be offered. Sleigh rides and refreshments will be available for a fee. Admission to this event is free.
Saturday, Feb. 7: Incubator Productions presents The Mobile Cartoon Museum at CLP Southside, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
This free workshop creates an immersive self-paced learning space with original art, lesson books, cartooning artifacts, a convention table demo, cartooning materials and a professional cartoonist on-site for critique and guidance. This class is open to kids and adults of all ages who can sit for a guided activity. Find more info here.

Sunday, Feb. 8: Sunday Fun Day: I Heart Art at Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day early with hands-on art and creative fun for all ages. Guests can create personalized valentines, decorate keepsake crafts, and enjoy live performances throughout the Museum. Registration is free.
Sunday, Feb. 8: Discovery Time: Investigating Insects at the Frick Environmental Center, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Has your family been to the Frick Environmental Center? It’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets for hands-on family learning and fun. Stop by the Environmental Center classroom for insect-related kids’ activities. Meet live insects, dress up like a bug, and build a bug home with loose nature parts. Registration is free.
