BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA — A 44-year-old man is being held on $1 million bail for a separate road rage incident from the officer-involved shooting in Bensalem on Saturday, authorities said.
John Thomas Mathis, 44, was released from Jefferson Torresdale Hospital and formally arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Terrence Hughes on charges stemming from a separate road rage incident in Bristol Township on July 27, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said.
The Bristol Township Police Department had an active arrest warrant for Mathis in connection with that incident, which involved collisions and the use of a baseball bat to smash a car’s windshield.
Mathis is being held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1 million, 10 percent. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 19.
Mathis is also being held on his numerous other outstanding court matters, for which bench warrants had been issued.
The investigation into the Aug. 2 officer-involved shooting in Bensalem Township, and the criminal investigation into the events that led up to the shooting, remain ongoing, authorities said.
On Saturday, Mathis engaged in a series of aggressive driving maneuvers and brandished a firearm at a motorist, which later led to the confrontation with a Bensalem police officer.
Authorities said those charges have yet to be filed.
