The Erie Humane Society is working to reunite a cat with its owner after being separated for months.
Back in June, a man named Eric was moving to El Campo, Texas from Buffalo, New York. He stopped in Erie with his fourteen year-old cat, Eddie, to spend the night.
But, Eddie found a hole in the hotel walls and got lost.
As Emily McCullor, the Director of Business and Marketing with the Erie Humane Society explained, “Eddie is a little nervous when he’s in new situations, so he likes to hide and it seems he must have gotten himself stuck in this hole. The owner thought he has disappeared, he couldn’t find him and he gave up hope. So, this was in June, Eddie was found at the end of September at the Pilot station near the casino.”
A family found Eddie and brought him to the Erie Humane Society. Staff had trouble finding the owner, but that didn’t stop them.
As Joe Lang, the Executive Director of the Erie Humane Society said, “They didn’t give up, they sent an email, and we were finally able to reach the owner who moved from Buffalo to Texas and left Eddie behind through very odd circumstances.”
The Erie Humane Society wanted to reunite Eric and Eddie, but they knew it would take some work.
“He has been with this gentleman for fourteen years. He has never known his life without his owner Eric and Eric was heartbroken of course, knowing he was going to be without his cat, but the staff deserves all the credit for really sticking with it and finding eric in Texas”, said Lang.
So they decided to enlist one of their own to make the 22 hour trip to deliver Eddie to Eric.
Brian Carroll, and Police Officer and a member of the Community Outreach said, ” I have done some transports for the Humane Society, usually they are shelter to shelter, Maryland is the furthest one I have done as far as a shelter to another shelter.”
Carroll knows the importance of a bond between a pet and its owner and said he’s more than happy to make the trip.
“Usually this is a re-home but this is a back to home and this is such a crazy circumstances thinking Eddie has been lost and was no where to be found and then shows up a few months later, what a great story.”
They need to raise $1,500 for the trip. To donate, click the Go Fund Me here.
