Scranton Prep girls’ tennis will be off to Hershey again.
The Classics, the District 2 champion, swept the singles matches to defeat District 11 champion Allentown Central Catholic, 3-1, on Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A Team Championships at the Lehigh Valley Tennis Club.
Scranton Prep (18-0), which won the PIAA championship in 2023 and finished as the runner-up last season, advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals at 4 p.m. The semifinals and final are scheduled for Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Scranton Prep has a record of 78-5 since 2022.
As Scranton Prep advanced to Hershey, Abington Heights (17-2), the District 2 Class 3A team champion, lost to District 3 runner-up Wilson, 3-0, at Birchwood Racquet Club.
Wilson advanced to the PIAA Team Championship quarterfinals in Hershey on Friday.
Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel earned a win at No. 1 singles. She improved to 7-1 in the state team tournament in her career.
This season, Lengyel, the District 2 Class 2A runner-up, has a record of 20-2.
Emma Cuck picked up a win at No. 2 singles. She is 20-1 this season and 78-2 in her career. Her victory was the 10th in 11 state team tournament matches.
Hannah LaCoe, who played at doubles for the Classics in the previous two state tournaments, had a win at No. 3 singles. She remained undefeated this season with a record of 18-0.
In the Class 3A first round, Wilson’s No. 2 doubles team of Victoria Sheehan and Delaney Kraras earned the first win. The duo defeated Abington Heights’ Jenna Follansbee and Brielle Crowell, 6-1, 6-0.
Wilson senior JinLin Chen added a win over Abington Heights’ Sona Hanumali, the District 2 Class 3A singles champion, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
Hanumali is 21-3 this season and will now get ready for the PIAA Championships.
Wilson clinched the overall win when Madison Uzar defeated Abington Heights’ Amishi Amit, the District 2 Class 3A singles runner-up, 6-3, 6-3.
Abington Heights’ Sammy Rosenstein won the first set, 6-0, in her No. 3 singles match against Emily Tippin. That match halted in the second set with the two players tied at 4-4.
Amit and Rosenstein won the District 2 Class 3A doubles title and will play in the PIAA tournament.
Wilson’s No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Mengel and Lucy Lamparella had a one-set lead over Kate Arp and Elsie Phillips, 6-2. The Lady Comets had a 4-3 lead in the second set when that match was stopped.
