The Erie Bureau of Police and cruelty officers with the A.N.N.A. Shelter are investigating the death of a dog that was shot and left in a dumpster behind an eastside store.

The dog, which the A.N.N.A. Shelter described in a Facebook page post as a miniature Australian Shepard named Prince, was discovered on Feb. 2 in a dumpster behind a Family Dollar store on Broad Street in the city, Gary Rictor, the Erie Bureau of Police’s animal enforcement officer, said Feb. 4.

Rictor said some people discovered the dog and called the police, and an officer who went to the area found the dog in the dumpster. The A.N.N.A. Shelter was contacted and collected the dog, and an examination by a veterinarian on Feb. 3 determined the dog had been shot at close range in the head, according to Rictor and the A.N.N.A. Shelter Facebook post.
