BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Police in Bethlehem say a vehicle was recorded going 79 mph in a 35-mph zone as they were doing targeted enforcement earlier this week.

On Tuesday, officers focused on Stefko Boulevard, as they addressed speeding complaints and recent traffic accidents, according to a Facebook post from city police.

City police say seven citations were issued.

The highest speed recorded was 79 mph in a 35-mph zone, police said.

Police say excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes, especially on busy corridors where pedestrians, businesses, and neighborhoods are nearby.

Bethlehem police say their goal is to slow traffic down and prevent injuries before they happen.

Also on Tuesday, officers conducted a PennDOT-funded Click It or Ticket seatbelt detail, resulting in 17 citations and warnings, according to the Facebook post.

Police say seatbelts remain one of the simplest ways to reduce serious injuries in a crash.

Residents can expect three additional PennDOT-funded traffic safety details through the remainder of February, including DUI enforcement and aggressive driving enforcement (two details), city police said.
