Both drivers were injured, one seriously, when a minivan collided with a pickup truck Tuesday on Route 100 in eastern Berks County, state police at Reading said.

Lee Afflerbach, 75, of Barto and Elizabeth Irish, 21, of Zionsville, Lehigh County, were taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital for injuries suffered in the crash shortly before 10:30 a.m. in Hereford Township.

Irish is believed to have suffered a broken leg, while Afflerbach was evaluated for suspected minor injuries to his legs, arms and face, troopers said.

Troopers said:

Afflerbach’s pickup truck was northbound on Chestnut Street (Route 100) while the minivan was southbound.

Afflerbach attempted a left turn onto Nanny Goat Hill Road despite oncoming traffic. Irish’s minivan collided with the truck’s front quarter panel.

Careening off the truck, the vehicle struck a snowbank on the left shoulder before coming to rest along the right shoulder.

The truck came to rest across both travel lanes of Route 100.

Both vehicles were towed.

Afflerbach was cited for an improper left turn.

Tropers were assisted by personnel from Eastern Berks Fire Department, Hereford Fire Company and local fire police.
