A Schuylkill County teen has been arrested in the shooting that wounded two people during a privately run basketball tournament Sunday night at Reading’s 3rd and Spruce Recreation Center, officials announced Thursday.
Reading police said an arrest warrant was obtained for Roylin Cabral-Villa, 18, Girardville, who faces charges of aggravated assault, risking catastrophe, firearms not to be carried without a license and recklessly endangering another person.
Cabral-Villa was taken into custody without incident about 5 a.m. Thursday in Girardville by Reading police working with the U.S. Marshals Service, police said.
He was committed to Berks County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail after arraignment before District Judge Priscilla Campos.
The shooting occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the city-owned recreation center at 320 S. Third St., where a group had rented the facility to host a basketball tournament. The event was not affiliated with the city’s Recreation Commission.
Police and ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene for reports of gunfire, but officers learned upon arrival that both victims had already been transported to Reading Hospital in private vehicles.
Authorities identified the victims as two males, 12 and 23. Both suffered gunshot wounds that were believed not to be life-threatening, officials said.
Details surrounding the circumstances that led to the shooting have not been released, and police said the investigation is ongoing.
In announcing the arrest this week, Mayor Eddie Morán condemned the violence and urged patience as investigators work the case.
