Pittsburgh fleet is ready for next snowfall

DEFINITELY STRONGER THAN WHAT IT WAS AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LAST STORM. MORE SNOW ON THE WAY. 12 DAYS AFTER THE WINTER STORM CHALLENGED THE CITY’S ABILITY TO KEEP UP, TRUCKS BROKE DOWN AS SNOW PILED UP, BUT MAYOR COREY O’CONNOR SAYS THE 12 DAYS OF RECOVERY HAS BEEN BENEFICIAL. WE DO KNOW THAT A LOT OF THE EQUIPMENT WAS REHABBED, BUT THERE’S SOME STUFF THAT, YOU KNOW, THE SHOP CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH WORK WHEN YOU NEED PARTS AND VARIOUS THINGS LIKE THAT. ALTHOUGH NOT AT FULL CAPACITY, MAYOR O’CONNOR SAYS THE CITY IS STILL CAPABLE TO RESPOND EFFECTIVELY TO THE NEXT SNOWFALL. A LOT OF THE TRUCKS, YOU KNOW, GOT REPAIRED, BUT, YOU KNOW, WE OBVIOUSLY KNOW THE STRUGGLES THAT ARE GOING TO GO ON. AND WE KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, THERE’S A STORM COMING THIS WEEK. OUR SALT RESERVES ARE GOOD. SO I THINK WE’LL BE OUT. PROBABLY THIS STORM WILL BE MORE PRE-TREATING BECAUSE WE’RE EXPECTING, YOU KNOW, BETWEEN 1 AND 3. HOWEVER, THE MAYOR SAYS THERE IS LITTLE THE CITY CAN DO ABOUT THE SNOW BUILDING UP ALONG CURBS AND IN BETWEEN PARKING SPACES FROM PEOPLE DIGGING THEMSELVES OUT. THE SNOW PILES. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE’S NOWHERE FOR IT TO GO, AND WE HAULED, YOU KNOW, 25 PLUS THOUSAND TONS OUT. AFTER THE STORM. THE MAYOR SAYS HIS ADMINISTRATION DID A REVIEW OF THE CITY’S SNOW REMOVAL OPERATION. WHAT WE DID RIGHT, WHAT WE DID WRONG, NOT ONLY TALKING ABOUT TRAINING IN THE FUTURE AND OBVIOUSLY THE TRUCKS THAT WE’RE GOING TO BE PURCHASING, BUT ALSO LOOKING AT REDOING OUR ROUTES, YOU KNOW, ARE THERE SOME THINGS THAT WE LEFT OUT THAT THAT DON’T MAKE SENSE? AGAIN, THE MAYOR SAYS THE CITY WILL PRE-TREAT THE STREETS AHEAD OF SNOWFALL TOMORROW, COVERING ALLEGHEN

PITTSBURGH —

A powerful weather system unloaded on the Pittsburgh region Jan. 25 and challenged the city’s fleet of snow plows to keep up.

Many broke down as snow piled up, but Mayor Corey O’Connor said the city’s Department of Public Works is ready to handle the next snowfall expected Friday, even if they’re not at 100 percent.

“A lot of the trucks got repaired, but we know the struggles that are obviously going to go on, and we know that a storm is coming this week; our salt reserves are good,” O’Connor said. “I think this storm will be more pretreated because we’re expecting between one and three (inches).”

A self-assessment of the city’s snow removal operation was conducted by the mayor’s administration, with the goal of improving moving forward.

“What we did right, what we did wrong, not only talking about training in the future, and obviously the trucks we’re going to be purchasing, but also looking at re-doing our routes. Are there some things we left out that don’t make sense?” O’Connor said.
