Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna is facing multiple charges, including felony aggravated assault, in connection with a fight in downtown State College, according to court records.Â
The consensus No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harrassment and disorderly conduct engaging in a fight in connection with the incident on Jan. 31 in State College Borough, court records show.
According to the criminal complaint, McKenna punched the victim in the face twice after “an exchange of words” between the group the victim was with and the group McKenna was with. The alleged assault, which happened near the Pugh Street parking garage, left the victim with fractures to his jaw, the criminal complaint says. The incident was caught on street cameras, which allegedly showed McKenna punching the man twice in the face.
Friends of the victim, according to the criminal complaint, told police that McKenna and the group he was with came from Doggie’s Pub, which hosted an event after Penn State’s outdoor hockey game at Beaver Stadium.
McKenna was arraigned on Wednesday and released on $20,000 unsecured bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 11. McKenna, a native of Canada, was charged by the State College Police Department.Â
“We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment,” said John Hanna, the associate director of strategic communications for Penn State men’s hockey.Â
Penn State lost 5-4 in overtime to Michigan State on Jan. 31 in the outdoor game. McKenna played in the contest, scoring a goal in the second period. Outdoor hockey had never been played at Beaver Stadium before. Officials said 74,575 people attended the game.Â
McKenna, 18, left the Canadian Hockey League to enroll at Penn State in 2025. He is regarded as a generational talent and has been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL draft for the last couple of years.Â
Penn State is set to play at Michigan on Friday. McKenna’s status for the game was not immediately known. The freshman has 32 points through 24 games this season.Â
The 18-year-old hockey star from Whitehorse, Yukon, already has NHL ties. He is a cousin by marriage to Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard, the No. 1 pick in 2023’s draft. Â
