The mayor of McKeesport has officially stepped down, and a new mayor has now been appointed following a city council meeting on Wednesday. In a letter sent to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 by the city council, Tom Maglicco, most recently serving as city administrator for the past decade, was appointed to the position. “Maglicco has served the city since 2015, when he became the City Controller,” the letter said. “Maglicco has a long history of public service – having served on the McKeesport Area School Board of Directors, on active duty in the U.S. Army, in state government as field staff for the House of Representatives, and as the director of the LaRosa club.”The news comes after the council approved outgoing Mayor Michael “Mike” Cherepko’s retirement. As a result, the council unanimously appointed Maglicco to serve the remainder of his term.“Tonight is not about a title,” Maglicco said in the letter. “It’s about trust. And I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me by City Council to serve as Mayor of the City of McKeesport.”He continued, saying, “I am also grateful for the trust of Mayor Mike Cherepko, who believed in me to help continue the work we have started together. Under his leadership, McKeesport began to rise again — and I am committed to carrying that work forward.”Cherepko was previously a City Councilman who worked as a fifth-grade teacher in the McKeesport Area School District, according to his official website. He was elected in 2011 to serve McKeesport’s nearly 20,000 residents as Mayor.
