Brutal cold and windy conditions are expected over the weekend in the Lehigh Valley, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an extreme cold warning through Sunday morning.

Wind chills as low as minus 15 and wind gusts between 45-50 mph are expected Saturday as arctic air comes into the area, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

The region, as well as neighboring Bucks, Berks, Carbon and Monroe counties, will be under an extreme cold warning from 3 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, and a wind advisory from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Lows will be in the single digits Saturday and Sunday.

The weather service encourages anyone who has to go outside to dress in layers.

There is a possibility of some light snow overnight Friday into Saturday, with possible storm squalls; otherwise the next few days should be clear. Temperatures should reach above freezing early next week, which should help melt some of the snow still on the ground from last month’s storms.

Additionally, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said temperatures are leaning above normal over the next two weeks.

Here is the extended forecast from the National Weather Service:

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 8 by 5 p.m. Wind chill values as low as minus 12. Blustery, with a northwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.
