ALLENTOWN, Pa. – It’s almost the weekend, and the Super Bowl is so close you can practically taste the wings. And while our home team isn’t on the main stage, many in the Lehigh Valley are most excited for who will take center stage in between all the football action.
Here in the Lehigh Valley, we may not be thrilled to watch Seattle square off against New England on Sunday. But one thing many can get on board with is the halftime show, which Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny is headlining.
“Probably the only reason I’m going to watch it, for the halftime,” Angel Rosa said.
Rosa is a barber at Cuts & Shaves Barbershop in downtown Allentown.
“I’m pretty much more interested in the halftime show, I don’t even know who’s playing in the Super Bowl,” Gavin Bergollo, the shop’s manager said.
Some are calling this year’s big game the Bad Bunny Show, featuring a football game.
Victor Martinez owns La Mega Allentown and hosts its morning show.
“If you go to social media or even other radio stations, it’s the Bad Bunny concert with a game before and after,” Martinez said.
La Mega is hosting a Bad Bunny watch party on Super Bowl Sunday.
“We have no choice,” Martinez said. “We have to be together. We have to be with our community.”
American superstar Bad Bunny mostly sings and raps in Spanish.
“When Bad Bunny hosts the Saturday Night Live show, the ratings go through the roof,” Martinez said. “When Bad Bunny shows up at the Tonight Show, the ratings go through the roof. And so, it may not be English, but as long as the ratings go up, they keep bringing him.”
Bad Bunny has also had multiple impressive stints with the WWE and he most recently won Album of the Year and two other Grammy Awards.
“Bad Bunny is a phenomenon that not even Bad Bunny can explain,” Martinez said.
Martinez adds, the community is not bothered by any negativity surrounding the upcoming event, or the “rival” halftime show to be put on by Turning Point USA.
“We haven’t even paid attention to it,” he said. “We’re so excited. We can’t wait for Sunday. We’re so proud.”
In Allentown, where more than half the population identifies as Hispanic, the area shares plenty of pride in the heritage.
“But Puerto Ricans are not the only ones excited,” Martinez said. “Bad Bunny has been able to go across all nationalities.”
Many are fans of all that Bad Bunny stands for.
“I like the fact that he’s tried to support his community,” Maggie Pasteur, from Allentown, said.
“Literally this kid five years ago was at a grocery store, he was a bagger at a grocery store,” Martinez said. “And now he’s the biggest artist in the world.”
La Mega’s watch party kicks off at 5 p.m. Sunday at Puerto Rican Club in Bethlehem.Â
Sarandonga on Hamilton Street is also hosting a Bad Bunny Bowl Watch Party.
