What to KnowWhile some events were already underway, the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics officially began today with the Opening Ceremony at Milan’s century-old San Siro stadium, one of the largest in all of Europe.Athletes gathered across four different locations in Italy for the ceremony’s Parade of Nations. Speed skater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca carried the flags for Team USA.Cauldrons in Milan and Cortina were ignited via the Olympic flame, marking the official opening of the Games. These are the first Games with Olympic cauldrons in two different cities.Alysa Liu delivered a strong performance in the women’s short program with a score of 74.90, lifting the U.S. into the lead in the overall team event. Liu built on the high score from her teammates Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who finished first in rhythm dancing.The U.S. tandem of Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse remains undefeated in curling mixed doubles as they bested both Canada and the Czech Republic in the round-robin play.Lindsay Vonn tested her injured left knee with an aggressive and successful training run in the downhill course, fulfilling a pre-race rules requirement to be eligible to compete in Sunday’s event.
