Although the snow from Friday isn’t supposed to continue into the weekend, cold weather and treacherous wind chill means Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburgh will be two more frigid days to add to the list.

The extreme cold warning from 1 a.m. early this morning is in effect until Sunday at 10 a.m. With wind chill, temperatures will keep dipping all the way down to -17 degrees until then.

“We might see wind chills for the entire day, remain in the negative digits and not get above freezing until sometime Sunday morning,” says Matt Brudy, a meteorologist with National Weather Service Pittsburgh.

Will Sunday afternoon or night reward Pittsburghers with a break from the hazardous cold? Somewhat. Brudy said Sunday will only see a high of 19 degrees and a low of 4 degrees, but will at least most likely reach above freezing by the afternoon.

But if you absolutely must traverse the cold and take big steps avoiding piles of snow which haven’t melted much in almost two weeks, make sure to bundle up as much as possible.

Brudy said the most dangerous time to be outside will be during daytime today, so don’t go outside if you don’t have to. Otherwise, you could get frostbite in less than half an hour.

After Sunday, the cold will take a break — for now. Monday’s temperatures are expected to be much more mild, with the high nearing 30 degrees and the low being 18 degrees, just one degree shy of the warmest Sunday will be.

Once the weekend passes, Monday and Tuesday will feel considerably warmer with temperatures reaching as high as 30 and 42 degrees. Brudy said the first half of the week will be a bit warmer, though low-but-expected temperatures will return for the rest of the week.
