The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason with one goal. Find the offensive mind who could get them back to the Super Bowl. They were unable to land one of the highly coveted play-callers like Mike McDaniel or Brian Daboll, but it still looks like the Eagles found a hidden gem.
Who Is Sean Mannion?

Sean Mannion is a former highly drafted QB whose career spanned six years. His playing career was highlighted with time on the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings. Throughout his career, he was praised behind the scenes for his football IQ.
Once Mannion’s career was over, he was quickly looked at as a coaching candidate. The Chicago Bears were interested in interviewing him for a role on their staff before Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers hired him to join the coaching staff. LaFleur had a previous relationship with Mannion from their time with the Rams.
Mannion was then handpicked by Packers legendary QB coach Tom Clements to be his successor. Through his two seasons on Green Bay’s staff, Mannion contributed to the success of Malik Willis in Jordan Love’s absence. Mannion’s work was highly touted throughout the league, leading to the Eagles bringing him in as Offensive Coordinator.
Mannion has no prior play-calling experience in the NFL. He did recently contribute as OC for the West team in the East-West Shrine Bowl. The intriguing part of his potential scheme goes back to who he has been around in his NFL career. He’s spent time with LaFleur, Sean McVay, and Kevin O’Connell. Any incorporation of these schemes would bring an entirely new look to Philadelphia’s offense.
Play-Calling Experience Added To Staff

Josh Grizzard was hired onto the Eagles’ offensive staff as the new passing game coordinator. He is a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator who has spent nearly ten years coaching in the NFL. He was one of the finalists for Philadelphia’s OC job before Mannion beat him out.
Grizzard was the primary play caller in Tampa Bay last year and was credited with calling third-down plays in 2024, where he had elite success. They had a league-leading 53.9 success rate on third down that year.
Grizzard’s first and only year as offensive coordinator did not go as planned with the Bucs, but a portion of that could be credited to injuries. Regardless of success, the importance of adding play-calling experience to the Eagles staff was desperately needed. There was no way they could go into the season with Mannion and no further experience calling plays behind him.
Greg Olson is another experienced coach who could be an option for Philadelphia. He was Mannion’s QB coach on the Rams during his early playing career. The 62-year-old was most recently the Las Vegas Raiders interim offensive coordinator this past season.
End Of My Philadelphia Eagles Rant
The Eagles needed to switch things up on offense. The internal offensive coordinator hirings never seemed to work, with Kevin Patullo being the latest example. Adding a level of McVay-style offense would completely shift Philadelphia’s basic approach.
Mannion has received great praise around the league and was viewed internally as a future coach. The Eagles got ahead of next year’s cycle and hired him a year early. Hiring someone with no play-calling experience is a major risk with the amount of talent on the roster, but Mannion seems to be an exception. His scheme will be an interesting one to watch unfold. Will it be a McVay-style offense, or will Nick Sirianni maintain control and keep it watered down?
