The city of Reading is establishing a warming/charging station at the 3rd and Spruce Recreation Center to aid residents affected by an extended power outage impacting a multi-block area south of Penn Street.

Starting at 1 p.m. today, the center at 320 S. Third St. will offer a place to warm up and charge cellphones, Berks County emergency officials announced Sunday morning. The site will not be offering food or a place to sleep.

As of late Sunday morning Met-Ed was reporting 1,678 outages in Berks, with 1,543 of them in the city. The utility reported that crews worked through the night as they tackle a complex issue. Restoration of power is expected by 8 p.m.

Scattered outages were reported around the region Saturday amid high winds and extreme cold temperatures.
