The Afghan Community of Erie signed an official contract to obtain land at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.
The contract was made official by the Erie Cemetery Association during a signing event held at the Afghan Community Center.
The space bought will reserve 50 graves specifically for the Afghan community at the cemetery.
Members said they chose Laurel Hill because of the supportive community around it.
“It’s really close to the city and it’s a really good area. We like the people around here since we came to Erie. We found Erie a very nice place, calm and good people,” said Rustanali Ansari, an Afghan community member.
The 50 grave spots cost a total of just under $52,000.
